Electric Car Markets in a Time of Uncertainty: An update to the Global EV Outlook 2026
Publication Year: 2026
Author(s): International Energy Agency
Abstract:
The Electric Car Markets during a Period of Uncertainty – which expands upon the comprehensive analysis found in the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026 released in May – assesses the most recent statistics on automotive markets for the first half of 2026.
The turmoil in the Middle East and the subsequent energy crisis have rekindled attention on the utilization of oil in road transportation as a crucial aspect of energy security. Consequently, electric vehicles (EVs) are currently a focal point in discussions over possible policy measures. Although the complete ramifications of the crisis on sales and policies will require time to unfold, the consequences may lead to an expedited transition in global automotive markets towards enhanced electrification. This may subsequently heighten economic security apprehensions in nations that already own substantial automotive sectors centered on the production of internal combustion engine vehicles.
