Abstract:

Ambient air pollution is the leading environmental health risk factor globally. The global transportation sector is a major source of this health burden. This article has taken up an issue concerning the influence of the implementation of electromobility assumptions on reduction of air pollution in cities in terms of sustainable urban transport systems. The main purpose of the article was to identify and analyze environmental effects resulting from the implementation of zero-emission buses in urban public transport on the example of the city of Szczecin. Electromobility has become one of the concepts that make it possible to achieve this goal. Its main objective is to reduce emissions of harmful substances into the environment by deploying electric vehicles. Research conducted by the authors showed that public transport, apart from the obvious effect of decreased number of private vehicles and decreased congestion, can contribute to reduced air pollutant emissions and become a significant driver for the implementation of electromobility in cities. Electric drives are more efficient, and if sustainable and renewable energy sources and electricity production methods are used, operating an electric vehicle can be completely emission-free and climate-neutral.
