Electric vehicles (EVs) have advanced significantly this decade, owing in part to decreasing battery costs. Yet EVs remain more costly than gasoline fueled vehicles over their useful life. This study analyzes the additional advances that will be needed, if electric vehicles are to significantly penetrate the passenger vehicle fleet.

The report aims to address the challenge of mobilising investment and finance to support clean energy transitions in the emerging and developing world. This is based on detailed analysis of successful projects and initiatives, including almost 50 real-world case studies – across clean power, efficiency and electrification, as well as transitions for fuels and emissions-intensive sectors – in countries ranging from Brazil to Indonesia and from Senegal to Bangladesh.

The objective of this report is to analyse the current status and outlook for decarbonization of the heavy-duty vehicle sector in the EU. The authors focus on developments over the coming 10 years, and how much the sector’s emissions could be reduced through energy efficiency improvements, electrification, and increased biofuel deployment.

The export of used light duty vehicles (LDVs) has increased significantly. In 2015, 3.4 million used LDVs were exported globally, by 2019 this had increased to 4.8 million. Most likely due to the covid-19 pandemic, there was a reduction of used LDVs in 2020 to 4 million. This report gives updated and new information to the 2020 UNEP report, “Global Overview on Used Light Duty Vehicles: Flows, Scale, and Regulations”.

The study shows that the global fleet of light duty vehicles (LDVs) is set to at least double by 2050. Some 90 per cent of this growth will take place in non-OECD countries which import a large number of used vehicles. Despite the critical role they play in road accidents, air pollution, and efforts to mitigate climate change there are currently no regional or global agreements on the trade and flow in used vehicles.

This report outlines the economic case for scaling ZET adoption and presents a blend of near-term and long-term strategies and solutions including policy, financing, access to charging, and technology innovation that can enable India to capitalize on the far-reaching benefits of a zero-emissions trucking future. The report also shows that the estimated total cost of ownership for medium-duty ZETs under a mature production scenario is lower than diesel trucks and could feasibly reach parity in the heavy-duty truck segment by 2027.

The report provides an understanding of segment wise propensity to transition to EVs by analyzing use cases and Total Cost of Ownership, and estimates the EV penetration by 2025 and 2030. It evaluates the policy framework and the readiness of the enabling ecosystem for EVs i.e. charging infrastructure, ownership models, localization of production, financing, and recycling.

This report elaborates on the imperatives for transportation through a sustainable electric vehicle transport system by the adoption of a transformation strategy relating to use of electric vehicles in mass transportation, the penetration of drivers of electric vehicles and the future of e-Mobility in India. These measures will go a long way in fulfilling the nation’s promise of reducing carbon intensity and achieving sustainability to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.
