The Right Moves for Environment

Abstract:
The surge in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the transport sector is a growing concern globally, given its enormous impact on environment. In India, poor access to low-carbon transport systems (public transport and nonmotorised transport), and increased use of personal vehicles due to increase in personal income, intensifies the problem. Bringing in low-carbon transport interventions in cities, therefore, assumes high priority for mitigating climate change. According to the author, secure and comfortable walking and cycling spaces are essential for mainstreaming non-motorised mobility in metropolitan areas. Cities must develop non-motorised transport-friendly street designs that prioritise safety. Non-motorized transportation can contribute to the economy in addition to providing us with a healthier lifestyle and a cleaner environment.
