Pedalling towards a Greener India
A report on promoting cycling in the country
Publication Year: 2014
Author(s): The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)
Abstract:
In the current situation, where we are concerned about the growing energy, carbon and environmental footprint of transport, cycling presents a mitigation with significant GHG reduction and health benefits. Despite meeting the mobility needs of millions of Indians and its positive impact on social and environmental externalities, cycling in India has not grown as it should have been. Indian cycle industry is facing serious challenges in terms of staying competitive globally. The report focuses on examining the key trends and issues with regard to growth in cycle ownership and its use as well as the growth of Indian cycle industry. Specific recommendations on promoting cycling in India have been suggested in the report. Important among these recommendations are the need to provide infrastructure and facilities for cycling in urban areas, making cycles less expensive for low income groups and providing micro finance. The recommendations also address the need to bridge the technology gaps by establishing a Cycle industry Up gradation Fund Scheme (CUFS), facilitate imports of components not manufactured in India and to establish internationally accepted testing facilities to provide quality assurance to export markets.
