Abstract:
The appreciable developments in the electric vehicle technology in the recent past has made the battery powered electric vehicles or Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) as a promising replacement for conventional fossil fuel-based vehicles that suffer from several inherent disadvantages. The evolution of the smart grid further enhances the usage of PEVs almost in all sectors. However, the quality of the power delivered by the smart grid is degraded by the inherent fluctuations in the renewable sources connected to it, which needs an immediate attention. Most of the presently available PEV chargers function only in Grid to Vehicle (G2V) mode, and quite a few charger configurations that are available to support both G2V and Vehicle to Grid (V2G) modes of operations are in fact, unable to support the grid functionalities to the magnitude that the latter demands. Hence, it is proposed to design, simulate, and develop a PEV charger that can effectively support gird functionalities during both G2V and V2G modes of operation. For extending an effective support to the grid, the PEV charger shall be capable of not only synchronizing with the grid, but also sustaining it, amidst the transients in the grid.
