Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) in India: Potential and Scope for Driving EV Adoption

Publication Year: 2021

Author(s): Narain Y

Abstract:

With a variety of supply and demand side steps to increase their uptake, India has committed to expanding the number of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in its motor fleet. The importance of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology in driving EV adoption in the country is examined in this White Paper.  V2G has developed as a fresh value stream for EV owners, representing a USD 17.43 billion global opportunity. This article identifies V2G as a potentially disruptive instrument in reaching India's adoption ambitions, as the country intensifies its efforts toward a shared, electrified, and connected future. The paper outlines a range of principles to guide future policy action in this domain and show the way for further research, collaboration and innovation. One of the goals of this research is to build the groundwork and make the case for long-term investments and regulatory foresight in order to establish and install uniformly accessible bidirectional charging infrastructure across the country. It also aims to investigate how EVs interact with the grid, charge station operators, and DISCOMs, among other things, and to propose all-encompassing principles for meaningful policy action on all fronts.
