Rare Earth Elements: Pathways to Secure and Diversified Supply Chains

Abstract:

Rare earth elements play a pivotal role in strategic applications, including energy technologies, advanced electronics, and aerospace and defense systems. Their concentrated supply chains have heightened their significance in discussions regarding energy and overall economic security in recent years. This study evaluates the present condition of the rare earth elements market, analyzing demand and supply dynamics as well as significant technical advancements. It examines the entire value chain from mining to permanent magnet manufacturing, assesses vulnerabilities within supply networks, and underscores the consequences of possible supply interruptions. The report delineates eight specific policy proposals aimed at fostering more secure, diverse, and resilient supply chains for rare earth elements.
