Battery Location on Course for Climate Change
Perspectives for a climate-neutral battery production for electromobility in Germany
Publication Year: 2021
Author(s): Agora Verkehrswende
Abstract:
The vehicle battery alone is responsible for 30 to 60 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions in the production of electric vehicles. If climate neutrality is the goal, battery production must also meet this goal. That is why we wanted to know in the present study: How can the battery be produced in a climate-neutral manner across all process stages? Where are the most efficient starting points? And how can development in this direction be initiated?
As fast as electromobility is currently picking up speed, it is difficult to take stock. There is still little data available, and what is available may soon become obsolete. It is precisely because of this confusion that it is imperative to collect the data and create transparency along the entire value chain. In this way, our study can provide orientation for further discussion and provide information on where the greatest potential and challenges lie.
