As part of the European Green Deal’s target of a climate neutral European Union by2050, the transport sector is called on to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by90% compared to 1990, and ICCT’s projections show that a large part of this reduction needs to come from passenger cars.

The presentation on “Fundamentals of Electric Vehicle Charging Technology and its Grid Integration” by Prof Pablo Frias, IIT Comillas, Spain focussed on the topics covered in the report that includes fundamentals of EV charging technology, interoperability, challenges of grid integration of EVs, grid support from EVs, and smart charging & cyber security. The presentation was held during the e-launch of the first two reports from the project “Integration of Electric Vehicles Charging Infrastructure with Distribution Grid: Global Review, India’s Gap Analyses and Way Forward”. 

The presentation “International Review on Integration of Electric Vehicles charging infrastructure with distribution grid” by Prof. Zakir Rather, IIT Bombay focussed on the topics covered in the report that includes countries analysed in detail, EV policies, EV demand and charging infrastructure status, grid Integration of EV, and case studies (demonstrations and commercial implementation). . In June 2021, there were about one million passenger cars newly registered in Europe. This is approximately the same amount as in May, and about 8% higher than in June 2020.

Electro mobility (e-mobility) is a general term for the development of electric-powered drive trains designed to shift vehicle design away from the use of fossil fuels and carbon gas emissions. It comprises all street vehicles that are powered by an electric motor and primarily get their energy from the power grid – in other words: can be recharged externally.

Electric cars are making big waves in the automobile world. These noise-free, pollution-free and high-performance vehicles are expected to make their I.C. engine counterparts obsolete by 2025.
