Decarbonising Fuel in the Transport Sector
Publication Year: 2015
Author(s): SLOCAT Partnership
Abstract:
The transport sector now accounts for about 23% (7.3 Gt) of annual global energy-related CO2 emissions (32 Gt). This is a significant rise over the last few decades, and to achieve a two-degree scenario CO2 emissions from transport would need to decline to 5.7 Gt annually. This analysis pointed out that while oil is expected to remain the dominant transport fuel in the coming years, rapid decarbonisation of fuels and scaling up of renewable energy in the transport sector will offset the emission. Mentioning the current trends in transport fuel use, the report opined that the transport sector will require implementing a set of concerted strategies and policy measures to increase use of renewable energy.
