How Charging in Buildings Can Power up the Electric-Vehicle Industry

Publication Year: 2021

Author(s): Hoover Z, Nägele F, Polymeneas E, Sahdev S

Abstract:

In the next five years, more than 50 million electric vehicles will be on the road. Updating charging infrastructure is crucial to the industry's growth.  EV-charging infrastructure will operate at the nexus of three different sectors with distinct but interdependent roles in the energy transition: electric power, buildings, and transportation. Today, there is a chance to shape an EV-charging strategy that benefits each of these sectors individually, accelerates the energy transition, and lowers prices for customers, EV owners, and non-owners alike. More than 250 new models of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) will be introduced in the next two years alone, and as many as 130 million EVs could be sharing roads the world over by 2030. To make EV chargers more accessible and affordable, urban planners, building developers, and electrical-equipment suppliers must integrate charging infrastructure into standard building design plans. In this article, the effects of expanding EV charging on infrastructure planning cycles and adjacent services are discussed. This research and suggestions will support four separate groups of decision-makers i.e. developers and land owners, urban planners and regulators, grid operators, and electrical-equipment manufacturers.
