Urban Transport and Related Emissions in Kolkata City

Abstract:
The study area of this research work is confined within the limits of Kolkata Municipal Corporation area (KMC) covering total area of 187.33 sq.km. The major objectives of this research work are enumerated below: (i) To identify the growth of different modes of urban transport and its importance and to mark out different sources of vehicular emission in the city of Kolkata. (ii) To identify the various causes which are responsible for automobile pollution in the city of Kolkata. (iii) To measure the degree of different automobile pollutants at different traffic intersection points in North, South, East, West and Central Kolkata. (iv) To make a co-relation between concentration of automobile pollutants and climatic characteristics which includes temperature, rainfall and relative humidity within the KMC boundary of Kolkata. (v) To make a comparative analysis regarding pollution level and vehicular growth among eight megacities including Kolkata and to assess the position of Kolkata in terms of growth of motorized transport and pollution level. (vi) To examine the status of present scenario of fuel quality standard norms in the city of Kolkata. (vii) To assess the status of automobile pollution and health hazard in the city of Kolkata. (viii) To point out various transport action strategy and legislative provision in the city of Kolkata so to minimize as well as to reduce the automobile pollution load.
