Abstract:

Energy is the vital force that powers our businesses, services, manufacturing, transportation, defence systems etc. Among that transportation energy presently accounts for about 50% of global oil consumption and 25% of global Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuels. Moreover, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to transportation have increased more rapidly than total global emissions in the past two decades. The transportation sector expects a doubling of the world’s motor vehicle population over the next twenty years. All the global policies that focus on reductions in oil consumption and GHGs for the transportation sector are based on these predictions. In recent years, the demand for transportation energy has increased rapidly due to the growth of world population and technologies, which has not only posed a serious threat to our future energy reserve, but also has been causing detrimental effects on our environment by releasing harmful pollutants. Also fossil fuel sources like coal, oil etc. are getting depleted day by day. Reliable supply of future energy needs without harmful environmental pollution and global warming has become a pressing issue. Use of electrical energy for transportation has been seen as a solution to the environmental problems.
