Development of a Framework for the Flexibility Assessment of Automotive Production Concepts

Abstract:

The automobile industry is undergoing one of the biggest shifts in its history in the area of electric mobility. In the case of electric mobility, the automotive body shop meets with various new specifications. Various production concepts currently exist to meet these requirements. Particularly, flexible solutions are gaining importance. The aim of this paper is therefore to develop an evaluation framework for the flexibility of production concepts in body shop. First, general and specific requirements for an innovative body shop are derived and characteristics of production concepts in body shop identified. Subsequently, a correlation analysis between requirements and characteristics lays the basis for a conception and validation of possible production concepts. The investigations conducted show that currently focused production systems can be mapped in the developed morphological box. From the analysis of the classification in the morphological box, it is possible to derive strategic implications and the operational scope of action of the production system as well as comparisons with regard to flexibility of different production systems.
