Government of India to expand Public Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure across the nation

The Ministry of Power recently issued the revised consolidated Guidelines and Standards for EV charging infrastructure on January 14, 2022. The Government of India has undertaken multiple initiatives to promote the manufacturing and adoption of electric vehicles in the country. With the considerable expansion in the public EV charging infrastructure, the electric vehicles have started penetrating the Indian market.

Promoting EV charging at shopping malls

The Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDC) and World Resources Institute, India (WRI India) launched the ‘EV Charging Guidebook for Shopping Malls in Delhi’ on February 4, 2022 to simplify and enable the adoption of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging in the parking space of shopping malls in Delhi.

Decarbonization of the transport sector

To promote eco-friendly means of transportation and decarbonize the transport sector, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has notified mass emission standards to introduce alternate fuels viz. blends of ethanol with gasoline ( E-10, E-12, E-15, E-20), flex-fuel (E 85) or (E 100) and Ethanol blend for diesel vehicles (ED 95), Biodiesel, Bio-CNG, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Methanol M15 or M100 and Methanol MD 95, dual fuel, M85 and Di-Methyl Ether (DME or D100), Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle, Hydrogen CNG.

India launches E-Amrit portal on EVs at COP26

E-Amrit is a one-stop destination for all information on electric vehicles—busting myths around the adoption of EVs, their purchase, investment opportunities, policies, subsidies, etc. The portal has been developed and hosted by NITI Aayog under a collaborative knowledge exchange programme with the UK government and as part of the UK–India Joint Roadmap 2030, signed by the Prime Ministers of the two countries.

NITI Aayog and World Resources Institute India jointly launch ‘Forum for Decarbonizing Transport’ in India

NITI Aayog and World Resources Institute India have jointly launched the ‘Forum for Decarbonizing Transport’ in India as part of the NDC-Transport Initiative for Asia (NDC-TIA) project on 23 August. The project aims at bringing down the peak level of GHG emissions (transport sector) in Asia (in line with a well below 2-degree pathway), resulting in problems like congestion and air pollution. The NDC-TIA India component focuses on developing a coherent strategy of effective policies and the formation of a multi-stakeholder platform for decarbonizing transport in the country.

Total 5,17,322 electric vehicles registered in the country over the last three years, 38 Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of e-2W, e-3W & e- 4W registered under phase-II of FAME-India Scheme

At present, Phase-II of FAME India Scheme is being implemented for a period of 5 years w.e.f. April 1, 2019 with a total budgetary support of INR 10,000 crores. This phase focusses on supporting electrification of public & shared transportation and aims to support, through subsidies, 7090 e-Buses, 5 lakh e-3 Wheelers, 55000 e-4 Wheeler Passenger Cars and 10 lakh e-2 Wheelers. 38 Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of e-2W, e-3W & e- 4W have been registered under phase-II of FAME-India Scheme as on August 9, 2021.

JNPT inducts nine electric vehicles

92,393 electric vehicles supported under Phase-II of FAME India Scheme by way of Demand Incentive amounting to about INR 278 cr

6265 electrical buses have been sanctioned to various State/City Transport Undertakings under Phase-II of the Scheme. The Ministry has also sanctioned 2877 electric vehicles (EVs) charging stations amounting to INR 500 crore (Approx.) in 68 cities across 25 states/UTs under FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles in India) Scheme Phase II.

Pan-India survey reveals growing willingness among car owners to go electric

According to a survey conducted by Clean Mobility Shift, while 79% of the respondents had bought a petrol or diesel vehicle recently, over 60% stated that they plan to buy a semi- or fully electric car in the future. The survey was carried out to gauge consumer mindset when it comes to the purchase of four-wheelers, sampled responses from nearly 500 current and prospective car owners from over 50 cities in the country on driving habits and their rationale when it comes to their choice of vehicles.
