Explained: How Tamil Nadu leads the global electric vehicle rally

Tamil Nadu, one of the world’s 10 largest auto hubs, is now inching towards becoming one of the largest global bases for electric two-wheelers. Over the past six months, several auto majors and component suppliers have chosen Tamil Nadu to set up manufacturing facilities to produce about 4.5 million EV (electric vehicle) two-wheelers cumulatively over the next five years.
Kolkata ranks high on e-vehicle adoption list

Kolkata has featured among six global megacities for its faster adoption of electric vehicles in mass transportation. The EV City Casebook 2021, which will be released on March 11, will have Kolkata as a case study along with Shenzhen (China), Santiago (Chile), Izmir (Turkey), London (UK) and Vancouver (Canada). Kolkata stands third — ahead of London — in terms of ‘percentage penetration of e-buses’. Significantly, Shenzhen is way ahead, with 99% of the world’s electric buses being in China.
Meghalaya EV policy aims to have 20,000 electric vehicles in the state by 2025

The Meghalaya government has announced a dedicated EV policy that targets 15% electric vehicle penetration by 2025. The northeastern state plans to have around 20,000 electric vehicles within five year period. Under the Meghalaya EV policy, the state government will provide incentives to a limited number of early EV adopters.
Delhi government directs all state departments to switch to electric vehicles within next 6 months

Taking forward the ‘Switch Delhi’ campaign, the Delhi government has ordered all its departments to replace all hired fuel vehicles with electric vehicles within the next six months. An order to this effect was issued by the Special Secretary (Finance), Delhi government. It has also been informed that the transport department of Delhi will be the nodal body to monitor the progress of the transition from existing diesel/petrol vehicle fleet to electric vehicles. It will also be necessary for all the departments to produce monthly action reports on the transition to EVs by the 5th of every month to the nodal department.
North MCD proposal: An EV charging station, battery swap point every 3km

The Delhi government aims to register at least five lakh electric vehicles (EVs) in Delhi in the next five years for which it decided to set up EV charging stations at every 3 kms. North Delhi Municipal Corporation has approved a proposal to set up e-charging and battery swapping stations for EVs at every three kilometres. This comes months after the Delhi government notified the Delhi electric vehicle policy, 2020, to reduce air pollution and to kick-start the economy by spurring demand.
Ola commences construction of mega factory on 500-acre site in Tamil Nadu, eyes production soon

With the Centre pushing for energy-efficient e-vehicles, ride-hailing major Ola has commenced the construction of a mega-factory on its 500-acre site in Tamil Nadu, eyeing to start its Phase-1 production of electric scooters within months. Coming up at a cost of INR 2400 crore at Hosur, this will be the world’s largest scooter factory, from where Ola's EV arm will be rolling out a range of electric scooters amid rising fuel prices.
Amazon partners with Mahindra Electric to strengthen its electric vehicle fleet in India

Amazon is all set to add 10,000 vehicles to its local delivery fleet by 2025. Under the partnership, Amazon India has deployed close to a hundred Mahindra Treo Zor EVs in seven major cities. These cities so far include Bengaluru, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Indore, and Lucknow.
Go Electric campaign launched to ensure energy security in the country

The Central Government has launched the Go Electric campaign to boost the adoption of electric mobility vehicles and electric cooking appliances to ensure energy security in the country. The government is promoting the use of electric mobility vehicles and energy efficient electric cooking appliances to reduce dependence on the imported fossil fuel and mitigate the impact of climate change. In this direction, Go Electric campaign can prove to be a game changer initiative as it will lead towards adoption of products which operates on renewable energy.

Delhi government to soon start registration of e-autos: State transport minister

The Delhi government will soon start facilitating registration of e-autos that can save up to INR 29,000 as compared to their CNG equivalents. Under its 'Switch Delhi' campaign, the Delhi government will now focus on adoption of electric three-wheelers, including e-autos, e-rickshaws, and e-carts. Under Delhi's electric vehicle policy, 177 three-wheeler models are available and eligible for purchase and scrapping incentives.
