India’s EV charging market is at an inflection point, with more than $450 million (INR 30,000 crores approximately) already invested in start-ups operating charging networks and battery-swapping models. Yet, with only one public charger per 135 EVs — far below the global average of one per 6-20 EVs — urgent expansion is needed to meet India’s goal of 3.9 million charging stations by 2030, says a new report by GameChanger Law Advisors and venture capital firm Speciale Invest.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has issued draft guidelines for setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure under the Prime Minister Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme. The scheme envisages installation of ample public charging infrastructure for various vehicle categories, including over 22,000 chargers for electric four wheelers (e-4Ws) and 1,800 chargers for e-buses.

The electric vehicle (EV) penetration improved sharply in the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segment in India during July 2024, while the government extended the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) subsidy till September 30. Electric 2W volume crossed the 1,00,000 mark last month while E3W volumes reached a new peak of 63,000, according to the report by BNP Paribas India.
