EV cluster to come up in Coimbatore

An electric vehicle (EV) motor manufacturing cluster and a common facility centre for electric vehicle motor development and testing will be established in Coimbatore with the support of the Tamil Nadu government. According to a press release from the Scientific and Industrial Testing And Research Centre (Si’Tarc), the facilities will come up under the Micro Cluster Development Programme.
Maharashtra leads in country with largest EV charging infra

According to government data, Maharashtra presently hosts the largest of 2,494 EV operational charging stations. The state also has the highest of 4,211 charging points. As per the data, while the country has rapidly expanded the number of public EV stations, it still requires building the necessary infrastructure to maintain it.
Assam and Tripura rank in the top three states in terms of EV penetration

As against the national average of 0.8 percent EV penetration, Assam and Tripura have a penetration rate of 2.16 percent and 2.02 percent, whereas Delhi is in the top position, with 2.71 percent. As the shift towards electric vehicles gains momentum in India, the North Eastern states of Assam and Tripura have seen the second and third-highest penetration rates in the country for zero-emission vehicles after the national capital New Delhi.

Pushing for battery swapping to accelerate adoption of EVs (electric vehicles), an inter-ministerial panel has called for providing a better choice to consumers by increasing affordability and accessibility of EVs for consumers. The government is aiming to strike a balance between innovation and standardisation to protect consumers of EVs even as it stressed on the need for a calibrated testing infrastructure for battery manufacturers and charging stations in an exponentially growing EV market.
Cabinet nod for 10,000 electric buses in 169 cities

The Union Cabinet has approved a scheme to add 10,000 e-buses to city bus services across the country, and to shore up urban infrastructure under green mobility initiatives with a focus on cities having no organised bus services. PM e-bus Sewa scheme has estimated budget of INR 57,613 crore, of which Centre will provide subsidies worth INR 20,000 crore; 181 cities without organised bus services will get green mobility infrastructure
India has over 2.8 million EVs on its roads, Central and South India dominate EV ownership

As per the data provided by the Union Minister and sourced from the government’s Vahan website, there are over 2.8 million registered electric vehicles (EVs) – 28,30,565 units – on Indian roads as of August 8, 2023. The data, indicative of EV sales over a 10-year period reflects the cumulative number of registered EVs in 27 states and seven Union Territories in the country.
Kerala indigenously develops lithium battery for electric vehicles

In a major achievement, a prototype of indigenously developed Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) battery has been manufactured by a consortium led by the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC). The battery has been developed in collaboration with Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and Travancore Titanium Products Limited with the aim of establishing an e-vehicle ecosystem in Kerala.
Electric vehicle penetration gap widens between India and other nations

Data shows that India’s EV penetration, or the sales of EVs as a percentage of total vehicle sales, is way behind many key countries in the world. And India will need to do some serious catching up to even meet the government’s own declared target of 30 per cent by 2030. According to an ICRA study, EV penetration in India in calendar year 2022 (CY22) stood at 1.5 per cent.
More and more people in small cities warm up to electric cars

In Q1 of this fiscal, electric passenger vehicles (including e-cars and e-SUVs) grew by 154 per cent at about 26,700 units, driven by affordable electric cars, launched recently. This wholesale is the highest-ever number in a quarter so far. The launch of affordable electric cars, growing charging stations and improvement in awareness levels about the long-term cost benefit of owning an electric vehicle has been driving the adoption of electric cars beyond metros and big cities.
