NITI Aayog and RMI India release a new report ‘Mobilising Electric Vehicle Financing in India'

NITI Aayog and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) India released a new report ‘Mobilising Electric Vehicle Financing in India’, which highlights the role of finance in the India’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and analyses that the transition will require a cumulative capital investment of USD 266 billion (INR 19.7 lakh crore) in EVs, charging infrastructure, and batteries over the next decade. The report also identifies a market size of USD 50 billion (INR 3.7 lakh crore) for the financing of EVs in 2030—about 80% of the current size of India’s retail vehicle finance industry.

Representing India at the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on "Addressing climate-related risks to international peace and security", Union Environment Minister, Mr Prakash Javadekar, stressed that the idea of climate action should not be to move the climate ambition goal post to 2050 and it is important for countries to fulfill their pre-2020 commitments.
Tata Nexon EV crosses 2000 sales milestone

Tata Nexon EV, has surpassed the 2000 sales milestone. In over 10 months, since launch, the sales of the Nexon EV reached 2200 units as of November 2020, indicating the rapid demand for the EVs in the personal car segment. After rolling out its 1000th Nexon EV in August this year, the car clocked in another 1000 sales units in a record time of 3 months (Sept-Nov 2020).

Mr Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways & MSME, has said that Government aims at creating core global competencies in India by facilitating seamless integration of the automotive industry with the world. Government is trying to create an ecosystem to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles in the country. Addressing the virtual conference -- Auto Serve 2020: Electric Mobility Conference 2020-Seizing Opportunities in New Normal, Mr Gadkari asked the auto industry to come together to work jointly towards achieving broader national agenda of reducing pollution. He elaborated a number of steps that Government has taken to promote electric vehicles which include reduction in GST to 5%, allowing delinking of battery cost of 2-3 wheelers from vehicle cost as it accounts for nearly 30% of the cost etc.
EVs most practical vehicle tech to tackle air pollution in India: TERI

Electric vehicles are by far the most practical vehicle technology intervention to address rising air pollution in the cities across India, observed Dr Ajay Mathur, Director-General, TERI during the launch of Digital Library on Green Mobility (DLGM). In his inaugural address, Dr Winfried Damm, Head of Indo-German Energy Programme, GIZ, said that the online library will become the vehicle to promote green mobility in India. TERI has developed DLGM under the India component of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)-Transport Initiative for Asia (TIA) programme. The NDC-TIA is a regional initiative coordinated by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety under the International Climate Initiative.
Mahindra Treo becomes India’s first lithium-ion 3-wheeler to achieve 5,000 units sales milestone

The Mahindra Treo range has crossed a sales milestone of 5,000 units and is currently being sold in over 400 districts across the country. Cumulatively, the Treo has travelled a distance of over 35 million kms on Indian roads, saving 1,925 metric tonnes of CO2 tailpipe emissions, equivalent to planting 87,500 trees to absorb the same emissions.
670 new electric buses and 241 charging stations sanctioned under FAME scheme

In a big push towards electric mobility the Government has sanctioned 670 Electric buses in the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and Chandigarh and 241 Charging Stations in Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarat and Port Blair under Phase-II of FAME India Scheme. Phase-II of FAME India Scheme focuses on supporting electrification of public and shared transportation and aims to support, through subsidies, approximately 7000 e-buses, 5 lakh e-3 wheelers, 55000 e-4 wheeler passenger cars and 10 lakh e-2 wheelers.
EESL to procure 250 electric vehicles from TATA Motors Limited & Hyundai Motor India Ltd

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a Super Energy Service Company (ESCO) under the administrative control of Ministry of Power, Government of India, will procure 250 electric vehicles from Tata Motors and Hyundai Motor India. The companies were selected through an international competitive bidding process, which was aimed at increased participation. Tata Motors Limited and Hyundai Motor India Limited won the tender and now will supply 150 Nexon electric compact SUVs & 100 Kona electric premium SUVs respectively for government use.
NITI Aayog to Launch Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)–Transport Initiative for Asia (TIA) India Component -- NDC-TIA India Component to focus on establishing a multi-stakeholder dialogue platform for decarbonizing transport in India

With the aim to promote a comprehensive approach to decarbonize transport in India, Vietnam, and China, NDC–TIA is a joint programme, supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and implemented by a consortium of seven organisations, namely Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), World Resources Institute (WRI), International Transport Forum (ITF), Agora Verkehrswende (AGORA), Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) Foundation, Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century e.V. (REN21). The India Component is implemented by six consortium organisations, all except SLoCaT. On behalf of the Government of India, NITI Aayog, will be the implementing partner.
MoRTH allows sale and registration of electric vehicles without batteries

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has allowed registration of electric vehicles without pre-fitted batteries. The ministry has clarified that vehicles without batteries can be sold and registered based on the type approval certificate issued by the Test Agency. There is no need to specify the Make/Type or any other details of the Battery for the purpose of Registration. However, the prototype of the electrical vehicle, and the battery (regular battery or the swappable battery) is required to be type approved by the test Agencies specified under Rule 126 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
