Electric vehicles a $206 billion opportunity for India by 2030

India’s 2030 electric vehicle ambition and targets would present a market opportunity worth nearly $206 billion (INR 14,42,000 crore) in the course of this decade, says an independent study released today by the CEEW Centre for Energy Finance (CEEW-CEF). The study also estimates a cumulative investment need of over $180 billion (INR 12,50,000 crore) in vehicle production and charging infrastructure until 2030 to meet India's EV ambition.
EU to target 30 million electric cars by 2030

The European Union (EU) will aim to have at least 30 million zero-emission vehicles on its roads by 2030, as it seeks to steer countries away from fossil fuel-based transport, according to a draft EU document. It is a huge step up from the 1.8 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles registered in Europe at the end of last year, according to the International Council on Clean Transportation, especially as hybrids are not zero-emission vehicles.
Ather Energy launches its electric scooter 450X in 16 additional Indian cities

Electric two-wheeler startup Ather Energyhas launched the electric scooter in Mysore, Hubli, Jaipur, Indore, Panaji, Bhubaneshwar, Nasik, Surat, Chandigarh, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Guwahati, Nagpur, Noida, Lucknow and Siliguri. The Hero MotoCorp-backed startup currently has presence in 11 locations across the country. Ather Energy is now fast tracking its plans to meet the national demand for the vehicle and by the first quarter of 2021

The world is at the cusp of a mobility revolution, one in which vehicles will be shared, connected, and have zero emissions. Rapid technological evolution is driving this shift in transportation around world. In a country like India, more than 80% of the vehicles sold are two- and three-wheelers, which when combined with buses are the preferred mode of travel of a majority of the people.
Japan plans to phase out petrol, diesel cars by mid-2030s

All new vehicles sold in Japan by the mid-2030s will be hybrid or electric as the government begins to unveil concrete steps for reaching its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. A new vehicle market consisting of only hybrid and electric automobiles would be a significant shift, given they only make up about 29% of Japan’s 5.2 million new motor vehicle registrations, according to Japan’s Automobile Manufacturers Association.
Battery costs fall, make electric vehicles cheaper: BMI

The cost of battery cells used for electric vehicles has fallen to an average of $110 per kilowatt hour (kWh), making such cars competitive with those using internal combustion engines (ICE), according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI). One barrier to a higher take up of electric vehicles has been the high cost of producing the lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, which according to BMI averaged $120 per kWh last year and $280 per kWh in 2014.
Delhi Government to cover Ecycles under EV Policy, announces 25% subsidy

Delhi government’s Electric Vehicles policy will now include the promotion of ecycles. The decision is being taken as part of the government’s draft proposal under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2020, which was notified in August 2020. Besides offering subsidies of up to INR 30K on two-wheelers and up to INR 1.5 lakh for cars, the government plans to subsidise 25% of the cost of the cycle. This is an amount of INR 5.5K alongside a fixed additional incentive of INR 2,000 will be offered for the first 10K ecycles sold.
Centre constitutes committee for implementation of 2015 Paris Agreement

The Government of India has constituted the Apex Committee for the Implementation of the Paris Agreement (AIPA) November 27, 2020, through a gazette notification. AIPA has been constituted with the purpose of “ensuring a coordinated response on climate change matters that protects the country’s interests and ensures that India is on track towards meeting its climate change obligations under the Paris Agreement including its submitted Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)”.
Trial run for electric vehicles kickstarts on proposed Delhi-Agra e-corridor

The necessary infrastructure required for e-vehicle (EV) to go from one state to another poses a serious challenge. To overcome this challenge, the government is preparing to build an e-highway in partnership with private players. Currently, the trial run of electric vehicles for the Delhi-Agra e-Corridor is underway. The specialty of the Delhi-Agra e-corridor is that it will have an electric public transport system. Facility of technical help or backup from the charging station will also be provided. Meanwhile, the e-vehicle trial run for the Delhi-Jaipur route will start in February 2021.

Addressing the virtual conference -- 9th Edition of Auto Serve 2020: Electric Mobility Conference 2020-Seizing Opportunities in New Normal, Mr Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways & MSME, said that the government is planning to set up at least one electric vehicle charging kiosk at around 69,000 petrol pumps across the country. Considering the huge potential of the automobile sector, the government has earmarked over Rs 51,000 crore for this sector under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, the highest amongst the 10 champion sectors.
