Electric vehicle charging stations expand 2.5 times in 9 mega cities in India

Additional 678 public EV charging stations were installed between October 2021 and January 2022 in Surat, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai. About 940 of India's 1640 public EV chargers are located in these cities.

The Ministry of Power recently issued the revised consolidated Guidelines and Standards for EV charging infrastructure on January 14, 2022. The Government of India has undertaken multiple initiatives to promote the manufacturing and adoption of electric vehicles in the country. With the considerable expansion in the public EV charging infrastructure, the electric vehicles have started penetrating the Indian market.
PPP is critical for strengthening EV infrastructure in semi-urban and rural areas

Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model seems a viable option where government engages and encourages private players to supply charging infrastructure in semi-urban and rural areas. To achieve the EV30@30 target the government will have to take private players together and help them create a seamless charging infrastructure on the roads leading to villages of India.
Fuelled by state policy, sales of EVs in Delhi gather steam

According to the Delhi transport department, sales of EVs increased by about 136% over January 2021 to 3,404, with sales of two-wheelers, for the first time, surpassing those of e-rickshaws. The sharp rise (753%) in sale of electric two-wheelers is significant. Of the 13.4 million registered vehicles in the national capital, 7.4 million are two-wheelers, and a major contributor to vehicular emissions in the city.
Under 20% spent on Centre’s EV scheme

The government has spent around ₹1,400 crore so far out of the ₹10,000 crore allocated under the second phase of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) scheme, according to Mr Arun Goel, Secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The FAME-II scheme, designed to support the electrification of public shared transport and help create charging infrastructure, was supposed to end on 31 March 2022 but has been extended by two years till 31 March 2024, as it was unable to create the anticipated consumer demand for electric vehicles.
Chandigarh administration approves city's first electric vehicle policy

The policy will incentivise the adoption of a wide arena of electric vehicles including electric bicycles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, electric cargo vehicles as well as four-wheelers, passenger and commercial. The incentives will be over and above the central government’s FAME II subsidy and customers who want to avail have to register their vehicle in Chandigarh.
EV charging stations to be built at all Delhi government offices

According to a Delhi government statement, the stations will be ready in three months. The idea is to popularise EVs among government officials who can charge their vehicles while at office. The single window process can be used to install EV chargers from DISCOM-empanelled vendors at low tariffs.

Government increases allocation for EV subsidy threefold

In its bid to accelerate the adoption for less-polluting vehicles in India, the government has tripled its budgetary allocation for the scheme to subsidise the purchase of electric vehicles. As per the budget document, the subsidy under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles (FAME) for fiscal 2023 is projected at INR 2908 crore, or more than three-and-a-half times the allocation of INR 800 crore for this fiscal year and almost nine times higher than FY21.
