MoRTH amends two schemes to boost battery-operated vehicles

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has amended two schemes to facilitate the operation of battery-operated and methanol and ethanol-driven vehicles. In the Rent-a-Cab Scheme, 1989, in paragraph 1, in clause (3), after the words and figures ―section 88 of the Act, the following shall be inserted, namely: - ―and the battery operated motor cabs and motor cabs driven on methanol and ethanol exempted from the provisions of section 66 of the Act," the MoRTH said in notification issued on August 5.
1,04,806 electric vehicles registered in 2021; 5,17,322 over last three years: Centre

The Ministry of Heavy Industries has announced that 1,04,806 electric vehicles (EVs) have been registered in the country during 2021 (till July 19). The Ministry added that a total of 5,17,322 electric vehicles have been registered in the country over the last three years as per the e-vahan portal.
IIT-Madras readies first indigenous motors for e-rickshaws

India’s thrust for electric vehicles got a leg up with an unit inside IIT Madras developing motors and sub-assemblies indigenously and signing agreements with manufacturers for commercial usage. The first of the motors with design details will be delivered on August 15. The Centre for Battery Engineering and Electric Vehicles Research has developed a range of motors and sub-assemblies for commercial deployment.
Electric vehicles to be exempted from registration certificate fees in India: MoRTH

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a notification to exempt battery-operated vehicles from the payment of fees for issue or renewal of registration certificate. In a statement, the ministry said it has also exempted battery-operated vehicles from the payment of fees for the assignment of new registration marks.
Indian EV industry records INR 25,045 crore investments in last seven months

Collective investment done by e2W, e4W, EV component makers, electric commercial vehicles, and last-mile delivery companies was recorded at INR 25,045.31 crores during January-July 2021. According to a study conducted by the CEEW Centre for Energy Finance (CEEW-CEF), the EV market in India will be worth USD 206 billion by 2030 if India maintains steady progress to its 2030 target. This would necessarily entail an investment of over USD 180 billion in vehicle manufacturing and charging infrastructure.
Ashok Leyland to transfer complete electric vehicles business to new arm Switch Mobility

Commercial vehicles major Ashok Leyland is consolidating the entire electric vehicles (EV) business of the group, including UK-subsidiary Optare into a new company called Switch Mobility. A new study published by International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) lays to rest the tired argument that electric vehicles aren’t much cleaner than internal combustion vehicles. Over the life cycle of an EV — from digging up the materials needed to build it to eventually laying the car to rest — it will release fewer greenhouse gas emissions than a gas-powered car, the research found.
Maharashtra EV policy to accelerate electric vehicle adoption

Navi Mumbai gets electric vehicle charging station

The EV charging station has been set up in Turbhe TTC industrial area, while the sub-centre has been proposed at Sector 13 in Airoli. The charging station has 21 AC/DC EV chargers for both two and four-wheelers. These include four DC fast chargers of 15 to 50 kW capacity and 17 AC chargers of 3.5 to 7.5 kW capacity. There is also provision for vehicles requiring AC slow charging.
