Only 0.8% electric vehicles in country out of 34 crore vehicles registered

Electric vehicles constitute a miniscule 0.8 per cent of the total number of vehicles registered in the country, despite government pushing for greener vehicles since 2015. According to an official data, out of the total slightly over 34 crore vehicles registered with road transport ministry's e-vahan portal, as on July 14, 2023, only over 27 lakh vehicles were registered as electrical vehicles.

The government has announced the re-bidding of production linked incentives for 20 GWh Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) manufacturing -- India's Rs 18,100-crore programme to boost local battery cell production. ACCs are the new generation of advanced storage technologies that can store electric energy either as electrochemical or as chemical energy and convert it back to electric energy as and when required.
All new tourist vehicles in Goa to be EVs from January 2024

All new tourist vehicles, as well as cabs and motorbikes provided on rent in Goa will have to be electric vehicles from January 2024, Chief Minister of Goa, Mr Pramod Sawant said. The Goa government proposes major reforms to promote EVs in the coastal state.

In its efforts to promote electric vehicles, the Uttar Pradesh government launched a portal — upevsubsidy.in — through which eligible citizens can avail subsidies online. For buyers purchasing EVs without batteries, the subsidy amount will be 50 percent of the total subsidy.

Uttar Pradesh govt lays down norms for e-vehicle subsidy

The Uttar Pradesh government has laid out conditions concerning the subsidy available on the purchase of electric vehicles under the Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy, 2022. As per a government order (GO) issued by the principal secretary, customers who have purchased electric vehicles in the state after October 14, 2022, will have to apply on the portal to get a subsidy from the government. The International Energy Agency has said there are promising signs of growth for electric vehicles in emerging markets like India and Indonesia going forward, outside of the three major global markets including China, US and EU. The deployment of clean energy technologies had another record year in 2022, and the electric car markets witnessed unprecedented growth as sales exceeded 10 million units in 2022, with a total of 14 per cent of all new cars sold being electric – up from less than 5 per cent in 2020, according to IEA report "Critical Minerals Market Review 2023".
